Vaccines for children should be purchased with Independence Day funds, according to Mahama.
Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged President Nana Akufo-Addo to divert funds intended for this year's Independence Day celebrations to address the country's shortage of child vaccines.
Mr. Mahama, who was speaking to National Democratic Congress party delegates in Mepe, North Tongu Constituency, Volta Region, on Saturday, expressed concern about the vaccine shortage after reading about it in the media.
He believes that the elaborate celebration is unnecessary in light of the nation's current economic challenges.
"I was very sad today when I read in the media that, for the first time in the Fourth Republic,We have been running out of some childhood vaccines since 1992."
"For the first time in our history, I mean the elderly can't get their bonds, children can't get their vaccinations, and when I was coming from Ho, Adaklu, they were cleaning the place. They brought military vehicles and are flying into Ho-Airport to celebrate the Fourth of July."
"Who celebrates Independence Day?" Mr. Mahama inquired.
"That money they're spending to celebrate Independence Day could have gone toward buying vaccines for our children," the former President added.
Mr. Mahama went on to say that a lack of vaccines for polio and measles means the country will face a disaster if an outbreak occurs.
During his meeting with delegates in North Tongu, Mr. Mahama did not hold back in criticizing the Nana Addo-Bawumia government for its economic failures and mismanagement.
On Thursday, the former President, who is running for re-election as the NDC's flagbearer in the 2024 elections, launched his campaign at the Cedi Auditorium of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Sokode, near Ho.
He followed the campaign launch with a tour of the Volta Region's 18 constituencies to interact with and solicit the support and votes of party delegates ahead of the election.
