Let Us Preserve Our Unity, President Akufo-Addo Tells Ghanaians.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has emphasized the importance of Ghanaians preserving the country's unity and peaceful coexistence.
He stated that Ghanaians cannot afford to allow individuals who seek to divide the country along ethnic and religious lines to succeed.
President Akufo-Addo said today (March 6, 2023) at the 66th Independence Day celebration in Ho, the Volta Regional capital, that "the greatest achievement of our independence is the fact that we have welded different ethnic entities into one nation."
He went on to say that, while the "Gold Coast was the forerunner to our independent Ghana," it was a collection of disparate groups. The achievement of independence provided us with our common identity as Ghanaians."
He stated that the country's forefathers were united and strengthened in achieving one common goal: independence.
The theme of the 66th Independence Day celebration was "Our unity, our strength, our purpose."
According to him, Ghana's forefathers were able to achieve independence because they were united in spirit and did not care about ethnicity or religion.
"It didn't matter where they came from; it didn't matter which tribe they belonged to; it didn't matter which religious persuasion they followed; and it didn't matter where they stood in society. They recognized that colonialism did not benefit our nation as a whole, and they were determined to put an end to it. And they did, as President Akufo-Addo explained.
He stated that it was time for the current generation to work to keep the country sane and moving forward, noting that "we should continue to work to improve accountability, efficiency, and transparency in the delivery of public services."
He also emphasized the importance of continuing the digitalization process, urging Ghanaians to combat the threat of illegal mining — galamsey.
"We must continue the difficult but necessary task of ridding our environment of the threat of galamsey, and we must continue to pay our taxes and demand that our leaders use them wisely," President Akufo-Addo said.
