President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has emphasised the importance of Ghanaians preserving the nation's unity and civility.
He claimed that Ghanaians could not afford to support those who want to divide the nation along racial and religious lines.
President Akufo-Addo declared today, March 6, 2023, during the 66th Independence Day celebration in the capital of the Volta Regional, Ho, that "the greatest success of our independence is that we have fused diverse ethnic groupings into one nation."
Although being the forerunner of modern sovereign Ghana, the "Gold Coast" was a conglomeration of several communities, he said. Our shared identity as Ghanaians was given to us when we became independent.
He said that in attaining their shared goal of achieving independence, the nation's founding fathers were strengthened and unified.
The theme of the 66th Independence Day ceremony was "Our togetherness, our power, our mission."
He believed that the reason Ghana's founding fathers were successful in achieving independence was because they were one in spirit and did not give much thought to ethnicity or religion.
"It made no difference where they were from, what tribe they belonged to, what religion they followed, and it most definitely made no difference where they stood in society. They were resolved to put an end to colonialism because they saw that it did not serve the interests of our country as a whole. And they did, according to President Akufo-Addo.
He noted that "we should continue to fight to increase accountability, efficiency and transparency in the delivery of public services" and that "it is time for the current generation to work to protect the sanity of the nation and assure its growth."
He urged Ghanaians to combat the threat of illicit mining, known as galamsey, and stressed the need of continuing the process of digitization.
As said by President Akufo-Addo, "We should continue the challenging but essential work of cleansing our environment of the issue of galamsey and we should continue to pay our taxes and insist that our government put them to good use.
