Ghana Water Initiative Introduces SUREWATER Mineral Water to Improve Water Access in Ghana.
SUREWATER mineral water has been launched by Ghana Water Initiative (GWI), one of the initiatives under SafeWater, a strategic business unit within Grundfos. This is a new packaged water aimed at increasing water security by making affordable water available to all and contributing to a more sustainable environment by reducing sachet water use in Ghana.
SUREWATER will provide clean water as a refill service to 4,000 Otoase residents, 150,000 Nsawam residents, and citizens from other parts of Accra. This is part of the larger GWI project, which aims to develop commercially viable solutions to provide water services to underserved communities in Ghana and provide drinking water to one million people by 2026.
SUREWATER comes in large 18.9 litre containers that can be refilled as needed and are designed for multiple uses. The use of dispenser bottled water can significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste generated by single-use plastic containers, thereby helping to protect the environment and its ecosystems while also providing clean drinking water to communities that previously had none. SUREWATER costs GHS60 for the first purchase, which includes both the bottle and the water, and GHS12 for subsequent refills, which include only the water.
The water is produced in Otoase by a centralized, supervised facility capable of producing 400 bottles per day. This facility also provides clean water to Otoase residents via smart water ATMs and home connections. The bottled water is sourced from the ground and undergoes a rigorous treatment process, including reverse osmosis, to ensure that only the highest quality water reaches the consumer.

Grundfos founded the GWI as part of the Grundfos SafeWater unit to develop and test new approaches to water service delivery in Ghana's rural communities. The GWI is committed to developing commercially viable solutions to provide water services to underserved communities as a true SDG-focused (UN Sustainable Development Goal) company focusing on both clean water and sanitation (SDG6) and combating climate change (SDG13). Since 2018, the GWI has run two pilot programs. The first, launched in 2020 in collaboration with the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) at Abomosu, provides approximately 8,000 people with access to clean and sustainable water via smart water ATMs and household connections. The second, set to debut in Otoase in 2022, includes a water bottling plant to provide SUREWATER mineral water, making clean drinking water affordable and accessible in and around Otoase.
