Details on Military Brutalities in Ashaiman - Area MP Narrates.
Ernest Henry Norgbey, Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, has provided details of what occurred in the Ashaiman community as military personnel invaded the area to brutalize residents over the alleged death of one of their own.
According to Ernest Henry Norgbey, he received a call at 3 a.m. about an invasion of military personnel who were brutalizing innocent citizens going about their daily activities.
He added that, while he has not been given the exact reason for the invasion, information he has received indicates that the soldiers were retaliating for the killing of one military personnel in the area on Saturday morning.
In an interview with Nimatu Yakubu Atouyese of Ghanaweb, he stated:
"I was just in the house somewhere around 3:30am concerning some invasion of military personnel in the Official Town enclave of Ashaiman and according to the sources they were just brutalising the innocent citizens; people who are going about their daily duties, people who would want to go to work early morning. They were simply brutalizing them to keep them from leaving their homes for reasons unknown to them. But what we are picking is a retaliatory attack on innocent citizens in response to the killing of one of their own on Saturday morning.
The MP also stated that he has spoken with the deputy defense minister in order to calm the situation and has assured him that the men will be called back to the barracks.
"As we speak, we made frantic efforts to get the authorities involved to call the men back to the barracks and I have been able to speak to the deputy minister for defense who assured me that things will become calm very soon. I see some indications that these armed men are leaving the area.
"I am in the community as we speak; I live in Ashaiman's official town, so I am aware of what is going on," he added.
After military personnel stormed the area and brutalized citizens, videos of the attacks on some Ashaiman residents went viral on social media.
Personnel were seen in some of these videos hitting and brutalizing residents who were outside of their rooms in the early hours of the day.
The incident occurred during a heavy downpour on the morning of Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at Official town in Ashaiman.
According to reports, residents have been ordered to remain in their rooms until the situation has calmed down.
The majority of the streets in the area are deserted.
