I inherited a severely challenged economy, but I was able to turn it around - President.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that when he took office on January 7, 2017, he inherited a severely challenged economy with the lowest rate of growth in over two decades.
But, he said, through hard work, prudence, and creativity, the government has managed to turn things around, creating an economy that was among the fastest growing economies not only in Africa, but also in the world, recording an annual Gross Domestic Growth (GDP) growth rate of 7% in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
"We were the best place to do business in West Africa, and in 2021, we were described as the most attractive destination for investment in West Africa," he said at the 66th Independence Day celebration on Monday, March 6.
"The next twenty-two (22) months of my mandate will be focused on restoring the economy we had before COVID and the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the period of rapid growth. It is a solemn pledge I am making to you, my fellow Ghanaians, and one I intend to keep.
"Before I take my seat, I'd like to inform you that, as promised at last year's Founders' Day Celebration, I will bestow national honors on some citizens of our country who have distinguished themselves in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. They helped to protect and preserve our population, as well as win global acclaim for Mother Ghana."

As Ghana marks the 66th anniversary of its independence, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged Ghanaians to recommit themselves to the democratic values won for the country through the blood and toil of its founding fathers.
According to a statement obtained by GhanaWeb, despite the country's challenges, the 66th Independence Day Celebration should provide an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on the country's achievements.
He went on to say that Ghanaians should never take their country's freedom and peace for granted.
"On the august occasion of our nation's 66th Independence anniversary, I extend warm greetings to you all on behalf of the Parliament of Ghana.
"Within the context of exacerbated domestic and global financial and security concerns, the celebration of this particular anniversary necessitates that we reflect on the progress we've made as a nation and to re-dedicate ourselves to the ideals of democracy, freedom and justice for which our forefathers fought and also died.
"We cannot be oblivious of that ultimate price many paid for our independence. It came at a high cost, and we must never take our liberties for granted," parts of the statement read.
He, therefore, urged Ghanaians to work together to help build “a stronger, respected and more prosperous Ghana that will be a source of pride for all its citizens”.
