KUSAUG PEOPLES CONGRESS (KPC)
25th February, 2023
PRESS RELEASE
The Kusaug Peoples Congress (KPC), an apolitical, non-partisan and non-religious association for the people of Kusaug had a cause to make a Press Release on 16th February, 2023, a day after the illegal conduct of the Nalerigu Chief, Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II, who purportedly enskinned one Alhaji Seidu Abagre as a rival Chief for Bawku, the Paramount Seat of the Kusaug Traditional Area. In that Press Release, we among other things called on the Government, led by His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to rise to the occasion and stand for the rule of law, the Constitution and Laws of Ghana that they swore to protect. We wish to update the Ghanaian people that KPC:
1. Recognizes the steps taken by the Government and the State to address the illegal acts of the Paramount Chief of the Mamprugu Traditional Area and his elders. Although we appreciate the efforts of Government, led by His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the State so far to uphold the rule of law, there is a lot more to be done. We expect the Government and the State to ensure that Alhaji Seidu Abagre, is arrested and prosecuted. Anything short of that and any attempt to allow Alhaji Sediu Abagre into Bawku will completely derail the current calm in Bawku. Kusasis from all over the six administrative districts of Bawku Municipal, Zebilla, Pusiga, Binduri, Garu and Tempane will never accept an imported chief to rule over them.
2. Thanks the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs for their Press Release dated 20th February recognizing Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II (Zugraan) as Paramount Chief of Bawku and the only chief clothed with the authority to enskin chiefs in his jurisdiction. We urge the National House of Chiefs to do same and publicly disassociate itself from, and denounce the illegality committed by the Nalerigu Chief. We want the National House of Chiefs to know that Bawku is to Kusaas as Manhyia is to Asantes, Osu is to Gas, Kyebi is to Akyems, Akropong is to Akuapems, Yendi is to Dagombas, etc. That is the truth and we call upon our eminent chiefs to take the side of truth for posterity to judge them favourably.
3. Has waited for more than two (2) weeks for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to condemn and dissociate itself from the disingenuous remarks made by its Member of Parliament for the Nalerigu Constituency, Hon. Issifu Seidu, on the floor of Parliament on 8th February 2023. Hon. Seidu stated falsely that there was no Supreme Court ruling on the Bawku Skin, implying there is no substantive Bawku Naba. We expected the leadership of the NDC in Parliament to publicly clarify their position on the issue. We have also taken notice of the selective and misleading remarks by yet another NDC MP, Hon. Mohammed Murtala, NDC MP for Tamale Central, on TV3 on the origins of the Mole-Dagbane peoples group where he deliberately sought to exclude Kusasis from the Gbewaa lineage.
Hon. Murtala knows that the Gbewaa shrine is located in Pusiga, Kusasi territory, and that ONLY Kusasis can sacrifice to the shrine. If Kusasis are not part of the Gbewaa lineage, how come they are the sole custodians of his shrine? We are calling on the NDC leadership to publicly dissociate itself from the malicious falsehood by the Nalerigu MP on the hallowed floor of Parliament and the disingenuous comments by the Tamale Central MP, failure of which KPC and the people of Kusaug shall consider same to be the position of the NDC Parliamentary Caucus and the Party as a whole.
4. Calls on the NDC leadership, especially HE Former President John Dramani Mahama to publicly state, as the sitting President of the Republic has done, that Asigri Abugrago Azoka II is the only duly gazetted Bawku Naba and that the Kusaug Traditional Area belongs to Kusasis. We also call upon the NDC leadership to join the Government in condemning the illegality perpetuated by the Nalerigu Chief and to support Government in finding a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict. We call upon all political parties to stop playing politics with the lives of our people, and on all politicians to refrain from perpetuating falsehood for their parochial ethnic or partisan interests.
As efforts are being made to permanently resolve the Bawku crisis, we implore all Ghanaians, especially those who have no adequate knowledge of the people and the Kusaug Traditional Area to desist from making misinformed and misleading statements that could further inflame passions on the ground. KPC remains confident that lasting peace would be restored to Bawku and call upon the sons and daughters of Kusaug to continue to remain calm and support the State in its efforts to enforce the laws of our dear country.
Kusaug is Rising! Kusaug Winnig Tasya!
Thank you!
Long live Zugraan Bawku Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II;
Long live Bawku;
Long live Kusaug!
Signed
Rev. Prof. John Azumah – President
Lawyer Maxwell Z. Agbambilla – 1st Vice President
Ms Rodaline I. Ayarna – 2nd Vice President
