Ghana's Armed Forces justify their raid on Ashaiman.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has justified the raid on Ashaiman in Accra on Tuesday after one of its young personnel was killed.

Soldiers unleashed mayhem on some Ashaiman residents on Tuesday, with helicopters flying over the area, following the alleged stabbing of a young military officer, Trooper Imoro Sherrif, in the town on Saturday, March 4, 2023.

GAF explained in a press statement that, while the military operation was sanctioned by the military high command, it was not intended to avenge the deaths of its personnel or to target innocent people.

"GAF wishes to state unequivocally that the military operation sanctioned by the Military High Command was NOT to avenge the soldier's death, but rather to apprehend the perpetrators of the heinous crime."

According to a statement issued by the Ghana Armed Forces, following operations in Ashaiman-Taifa and Tulaku, military personnel apprehended 184 suspects aged 21 to 47 and turned them over to the Military Police.

The military command explained in a statement signed by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quarshie, Director of General Public Relations at the Ghana Armed Forces, that the people apprehended will be handed over to the Ghana Police Service for screening and further action.

"During the swoop, personnel seized 29 slabs and 57 mini slabs of suspected Indian hemp and amnesia, among other narcotics."

"The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) would also like to state unequivocally that the swoop was not directed at innocent civilians, but rather was an intelligence-led operation conducted on suspected criminal hideouts and crime-prone areas in the general area."

GAF expressed regret in a statement about innocent people being caught up in the mayhem at Ashaiman.

"GAF acknowledges, however, that some innocent people may have been caught up in the operation and, as a result, suffered some distress due to the location they found themselves in at the time."

GAF also urged residents to provide useful information to security agencies in order to help uncover the truth.
