The Brazillian company is known as “Contractor”

Working on phase two of the Kumasi kejetia market, Kumasi international airplane ort and other projects in Ghana have sacked over 1,500 of its employed Ghanaian workers. The company in December announced to the staff employed about appointment termination in accordance with the Labour Act.

The spokesperson for the company who wants to be anonymously speaking to GHONE Tv’s Ashanti regional correspondent, Isaac justice Bediako, a management member of the company revealed that, all the affected 1,500 employees were given a month notice on the companies decision to drop them off,  which was followed by a compensation package as well, so he guess they understood them and prepared on what they were going to do next.

"Management didn't want to violate the country's

labour laws so we followed every step including

medical check out. This is not something we

intended to do but the situation has forced us to

do that,"

He also spoke about the phase two of the Kumasi International airport which about 90% done remaining with the installation of control towers, gadgets and other valuables to make it fully furnished has also been affected duo to the ongoing government debt restructure programme.

“The project has been affected by the ongoing

government debt restructure programme.

Government, I mean the finance minister has

suspended external payment. So the UK

government responsible for founding the project

has stopped releasing funding to us to work on

the project. So we are ready to work but we don't

have money to pay workers and buy material so

that's the problem we are facing at the moment,

"At the moment only few

administrative staff are currently working with

the company doing administrative work with few

drivers. All our vehicles have equally been

packed at our warehouse. So for now there's no

work on any of our sites."

Although this was a tough decision for the company to make, it's in the interest of the people for the company to lay them off so they could find something new doing now that there is funds flowing to support the project.
