The Convention People's Party (CPP) Chairwoman, Nana Akosua Frimpongmaa-Sarpong Kumankumah, has urged the young to seize their future and improve the nation's economic status.
By electing the appropriate candidate to power, she claimed that only the young could bring about the nation's economic independence.
She said the CPP believed in the young and had given them the reins of power to bring about the necessary change that would improve their lives when she spoke to some University of Ghana students yesterday at the Elizabeth Sey Hall in Accra to commemorate the independence day.
She said that, aside from the March past, the day needs to be readjusted and repositioned for the young to appreciate its value. She claimed that Independence Day was a very significant day in the lives of Ghanaians.
She urged the students to "grab the mantle today, or the difficulties of tomorrow would engulf you" if they wished to attain economic independence.
If you want to achieve something, now is the moment to do it, she said. "Never blame the government's leadership if you don't get up today," she added.
Can-do attitude
The chairwoman exhorted the students to let the Ghanaian flag awaken Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first President, and claimed that spirit contained the "can-do spirit" in them.
She advised them to support individuals who worked for their interests in terms of governance rather than just supporting political parties they happen to favor.
She stated, "I think the legacy of the CPP is that if the youth can examine themselves and fire their spirits today, the same spirit of God inside them can assist them to address challenges facing the country.
Agriculture unit
Blessed Godsbrain Smart, nicknamed Captain Smart, a broadcaster and CPP member, pushed the nation's institutions to offer programs that would advance national development and increase students' employability after graduation.
The kids, he said, weren't being idle; rather, poor leadership had prevented them from putting themselves in a position where they might find employment.
Yet, he urged the government to set up an agricultural team to hire young people in order to feed the population.
The country may become self-sufficient if the youth are hired and paid at least GH $5,000 per month to work in agriculture, he added.
Moreover, he asked the media to advocate for the youth's rightful position in politics and national administration.
