condemnation of the terrorism and military brutality occurrences in Ashaiman
A group of military men was reportedly illegally deployed into civilian villages in Ashaiman early today, March 7, 2023. There, they unleashed unimaginable savagery and terrible attacks on innocent residents and bystanders. FixTheCountry has validated these accounts.
According to what we learned, the military troops invaded the Ashaiman neighborhoods to exact severe force and fear in retaliation for the purported weekend murder of a military commander.
By issuing this statement, we denounce the Ghanaian Armed Forces' acts of terror, violence, illegality, and inhumanity. Nothing justifies gathering up and committing acts of terror on common, defenseless individuals.
Cowardice and ineptitude were displayed in this action. We once again stress that no one, not even the military, has the right to impose their own laws. This is especially true if doing so results in the brutalization of communities rather than raising public awareness of the injustices in our society and the oppressive system that Ghanaians are forced to live under every day.
While we express our condolences to the family of the deceased soldier and urge the authorities to take appropriate action to ensure that the offenders are prosecuted, we also believe it is crucial that the conduct of the Ghana Armed Forces, as trained professionals, be subject to an independent review to reveal the level of impunity and contempt for our democracy that it exhibits.
The horrifying photographs from Ashaiman highlight how the political class in this country is increasingly accepting of military impunity and the practice of extrajudicial killings. Our elected authorities frequently send military forces into our neighborhoods to kill and injure residents. We continue to see repeated extrajudicial executions and acts of violence against citizens in Ejura, Wa, Techiman, and Somanya while our government turns a blind eye and refuses to hold the Ghana Military Forces accountable for its atrocities.
We are confident that our Country would pay the ultimate price if the Ghana Military Forces are not promptly brought to heel since impunity has been allowed to thrive.
The Ghana Armed Forces should take control and enact change and discipline under the direction of the civilized, moderate, and democratic components of the Ghana Armed Forces. We demand the resignation of the Military High Command. We are confident that many members of the Ghana Armed Forces oppose these activities and concur that the Military High Command, particularly its Commander in Chief, continues to defame the Army by approving acts of lawlessness and violence. We urge the moderate parts of the Armed Forces to take the necessary steps to bring about the institution's required transformation and reform, since change must first come from inside the military.
We also urge the legal authorities and all other voices of conscience in our nation to speak out, protest, and work to restore the rule of law.
We further ask for justice for impacted persons and demand responsibility and punishment for those responsible for these atrocities.
