Celebrated Ghanaian highlife musician Akwaboah has made some assertions about the genre of music Black Sherif does. Black Sherif is recognized both locally and internationally as a hip-hop artist. However, singer and songwriter Akwaboah has a different perception of Blacko. According to Akwaboah, if you listen attentively to most of the songs of Black Sherif, you will realize he is a high-life artist and not a hip-hop artist as he is portrayed by many.
"I will describe most of the songs Black Sherif
does as Highlife," Akwaboah told the host of
Accra-based Joy FM's morning show, Kojo
Yankson.
He further added that, although Black Sherif has hip hop songs, most of his songs or current songs are high life and no one can deny that provided the person is musically endowed.
"When you listen to the way he [Black Sherif]
sings and everything, it is evident he is a Highlife artiste, but he has been pushed to Hiphop."
Going forward, he revealed that, should Black Sherif be tagged as a high-life artiste, highlife will be one of the biggest genres here in Ghana because he will be selling it internationally. Black Sherif has received more international recognition than his songs and got reactions from Burnaboy, Dj Khalid, and wale, one of his songs was also featured in an NBA game somewhere in 2022.
"So going global, imagine calling what he is
doing Highlife, that would have been Highlife on
the map, he projected. But in a way, it appears
we are pushing him into hip-hop or Afrobeats.
"So now what is happening is, he is out there but
they are calling it Hiphop or Afrobeats”.
Akwaboah’s arguments have received a positive response from many as Black Sherif himself has stated categorically that, he derives his music from a high life perspective maKing Akwaboah’s argument a valid one.
