The Democracy Index for 2022 has been released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), which ranks 167 countries based on their democratic practices. The survey indicates that only 8% of the world's population lives in full democracies, while more than one-third of the world's population lives under authoritarian regimes.

The index used by the EIU to rank countries is based on five categories: Electoral process and Pluralism, Function of government, Political participation, Political Culture, and Civil liberties. The scores for each category are averaged to determine the overall score for each country, which is then used to rank them.

According to the Democracy Index, Norway tops the list as the world's most democratic country, followed by New Zealand and Iceland. The top 10 countries on the list are dominated by European countries, with Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Ireland, and the Netherlands rounding out the list. Taiwan, an East Asian country, is the only non-European country to make the top 10.

The highest-ranked African country on the list is Mauritius, which is ranked 21st, followed by Botswana at 32nd place. South Africa, Namibia, and Ghana also made the list of the top-ranked African countries.

The Democracy Index shows that democratic practices are declining globally, with only a few countries improving their scores in recent years. The report highlights that the decline in democratic practices is partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has provided an opportunity for authoritarian leaders to consolidate power and restrict civil liberties.

In conclusion, the Democracy Index for 2022 shows that only a small fraction of the world's population lives in full democracies, and democratic practices are declining globally. The report serves as a reminder that democracy is a fragile system and requires constant vigilance to protect and maintain.
