To start a two-day tour of the Bono East Region, former president John Mahama landed there yesterday. He will be pleading with National Democratic Congress (NDC) delegates to give him their full support so he may head the party once more in the forthcoming presidential primaries.
Former President John Dramani Mahama formally announced his decision to run again as the party's flagbearer while addressing party delegates in the Kintampo North Constituency of the area.
He asserted that the nation requires an experienced politician like himself to restore economic growth and lift the nation out of its current state of suffering.
He believes that the nation is currently bankrupt and that he is the only member of the NDC with the knowledge and skills necessary to defeat the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming general election in 2024.
Mr. Mahama concluded his remarks to the delegates by advising five candidates for the Kintampo North Constituency of the NDC to run honorable campaigns free of insults.
The former president is scheduled to spend two days in the Bono East Region, visiting the Nkoranza North and South constituencies yesterday as of the time of this report's writing and moving on to other districts tomorrow, according to his itinerary.
He would visit Bono and Ahafo areas as part of the party's leadership campaign, the newspaper has learned.
In the meantime, his visit has sparked debate on social media between party supporters and some NPP supporters in the area, with some claiming that the former president arrived at the Sunyani Airport in a private jet while ten empty V8 vehicles drove from Accra to Sunyani to transport him and his closest entourage to Bono East to begin his campaign there.
"He is someone who claims to cut down on government expenditures but, while in opposition and yearning to be president again, is irresponsible with money and yet finds space to complain about government expenditures," several of the people said.
