The farmers are sticking to all the agronomic methods we taught them, including weeding, fertilizer application, pruning, hygienic harvest, and "They are experiencing increased yields as a result of the economic shade tree planting," he continued.
?GCFRP
As part of efforts to address the causes of deforestation and forest degradation, the GCFRP's implementation got underway in 2019.
The program was launched against the backdrop of the country's top source of foreign cash, cocoa production, being negatively impacted by the country's growing deforestation rate.
The program focuses on three main goals: minimizing expansionist cocoa production activities in forested regions; reducing emissions by around 40% over the course of the strategy's 20-year lifecycle (2016-2035); and enhancing cocoa farmers' quality of life.
Design
When the hotspot intervention areas produce results, the incentive-based program offers carbon credit payments from the global carbon fund.
The hotspot intervention regions are required to cut emissions by 10 million tonnes by 2024 (2019–2024) with a unit yield of $5, equating to $50 million, as per the deal struck with the World Bank's Carbon Fund.
Intervention hotspots
With assistance from the chocolate sector and businesses along the value chain, the National REDD+ Secretariat of the Forestry Commission and COCOBOD identified what are known as hotspot intervention sites to guarantee that the program is implemented
