Thieves in Tema cut newly installed ECG cables, leaving residents in the dark.

Some unknown persons have cut parts of some newly laid electricity cables by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at the Smelter Two Bulk Supply Point, according to Mr. Emmanuel Akinie, Tema ECG Regional General Manager.

Mr. Akinie told the Ghana News Agency in Tema that the power outages in Kpone and its environs a few days ago were the result of their actions.

B5 Plus, Mass Industries, Mavis Industries, Blow-Chem, the entire Kpone Township, Community 25, Ghana Steel, Affordable Housing, and Adi Steel are among the areas and industries served by the Bulk Supply Point cable.

He stated that ECG discovered the cable cut on March 8, 2008, as part of their investigation into the dawn outage.

He stated that the cable was part of a new set of cables that had been laid a few days prior to the incident, and that they were intended to replace some old and worn-out cables.

He revealed that the cables were replaced due to the difficulties in supplying electricity to these locations for some time now.

According to the ECG General Manager, the outage was caused by the cutting of the cable after it had been laid and energized (electricity was running through them).

"As of now, the cable has been decommissioned because it requires work before it can be energized again," he explained.

However, he added that the load of customers who had no supply due to the cable cut had been transferred to other networks and were now on supply while engineers worked to repair the cut cable.

He also pleaded with customers and the general public to help protect ECG property and equipment because damage to them, such as the cable cut, affected customers while costing the company money that could have been spent on other projects.

Mr. Akinie cautioned criminals against such acts, saying such attempts were dangerous as one could easily lose their life through electrocution.

“When cables are laid, you may not know whether there is electricity in them or not; in this case, while the person was cutting it, there was an explosion which then caused the outage and the person also bolted, leaving behind a hacksaw,” he said
