The Gunners saw their European season come to an end after a penalty shootout loss to Sporting

Arsenal were knocked out of the Europa League in the last 16 after losing to Sporting on penalties.

The two teams were inseparable after 120 minutes of football, with the game ending 1–1 on aggregate and drawing 3–3.

Granit Xhaka put Arsenal ahead in the first half but Pedro Goncalves equalized with a goal near the halfway line after the break.

Arsenal nearly won in extra time when Leandro Trossar hit the post and Gabriel's header was cleared off the line.

In the end, Sporting won on penalties. Gabriel Martinelli missed a penalty and the visitors scored five goals.

Here are the Gunners' ratings against Sporting Cp tonight.

Aaron Ramsdale 6

Caught in by a brilliant long-range shot from Goncalves. Some will question Ramsdale's positioning, but you also have to applaud the finish. Made a great save to deny Marcus Edwards. I couldn't save anything in the firefight.

Takehiro Tomiyasu N/A

Lasted less than 10 minutes due to injury forced him. It seems that I pinched something stretched for the ball.

William Saliba

Had a good game and looked solid but was substituted after just 22 minutes due to injury. Arsenal will be praying it's nothing serious.

Gabriel 7

The better of Arsenal's two centre-backs tonight, even if not at his best. Had some great blocks in the first half to stop Sporting at the break. He almost scored the winning goal in extra time.

Alexander Zinchenko 7

Enjoyed the ball as usual but didn't have the impact it should have. Landed a decisive strike on Edwards as he broke away in the first half.

Fabio Viera 5

He got the role of 'Martin Ödegaard' and looked pretty good for the first half. Faded after a break and should have come out earlier.

Jorginho 7

Played a superb first-set pass as he sliced ??through the Sporting defense to find Gabriel Martinelli. Partly because of Sporting's equalizer when he got Xhaka in trouble.

Granite Xhaka 7

Ended a long wait to score and scored for the first time since October. Captain for the night and had a decent game.

 Nelson 6

Weird life moments in the first half, especially the cross Jesus almost climbs on at the end. Take off in just under 30 minutes.

Gabriel Jesus 6

There are some bright spots in its first launch since November. Substituted in the first half as Arsenal continued to control their playing minutes.

Gabriel Martinelli 6

He was involved in the first goal when his shot was saved and Xhaka grabbed the rebound. He works tirelessly on the left flank and is Arsenal's most agile striker. He missed his penalty.

Replacement

Ben White (Tomiyasu 9') 6

Come back much earlier than expected. Post solid ads.

Rob Holding 6

A rare appearance for a centre-back and he was mostly defensive.

Leandro Trosar (Jesus 45') 7

Incidentally, for Jesus. He almost scored when he hit the post in extra time.

Bukayo Saka (Nelson 66') 7

Thrown in as Arteta reacts to Sporting's equaliser. Hit your opponent several times.

Thomas Partey (Jorginho 65') 8 | star player

Brings some composure and control to midfield. Very important for the Arsenal game. A class above all.

Martin Odegaard (Vieira 101') Not available

Unused substitutes: Turner, Hilson, Tierney, Smith Rowe, Kivior
