It is reported that it is "very likely" Chelsea will sell goalkeeper Edouard Mendy this summer, amid ties to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The Senegal international has had a rough season at Stamford Bridge after falling behind Kepa Arrizabalaga in attack order, he struggled for consistent minutes.
It's no secret that Spurs are looking for a replacement for Hugo Lloris, with Mendy being the latest big name to be linked with the club.
Indeed, the 31-year-old has barely played for the Blues this season, making just 11 appearances in all competitions.
Granted he had some injury problems, but now Graham Potter seems to have chosen Kepa as his main goalkeeper, even though Mendy has been crucial to Chelsea in the past. The scorer has received FIFA and UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year awards in 2021, he helped Chelsea win the Champions League in 2020 and more recently helped his team win the FIFA Championship. Club World Cup in 2021.
But, with Mendy so far yet to sign a contract extension after being 'outraged' by a recent offer, it now looks set to leave Stamford Bridge, opening the door for Tottenham.
Mendy joins Tottenham goalkeeper's target list
That's according to Athletic, who say there is now a "high probability" that Chelsea will look to sell Mendy this summer.
They added that this could alarm Tottenham, who were linked with the player in January and were reportedly 'given the opportunity' to sign Mendy.
As mentioned, Spurs are looking for a new goalkeeper as 37-year-old Lloris is nearing the end of his career. The Frenchman, currently sidelined with a knee injury, will have just one year left on his contract this summer.
Tottenham have been linked with a number of potential targets, including Brentford's David Raya, Everton's Jordan Pickford and most recently AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
However, Mendy is arguably the better choice as he has a better record of winning trophies and has the most Champions League experience.
There is currently no indication of how much Chelsea are willing to accept for the goalkeeper this summer, despite Transfermarkt valuing him at 25m.
In reality, however, given his recent injuries, the Blues would do well to recoup the 22m they spent on him, but they expect him to have two years left on his contract. Tottenham will likely have a much higher chance of signing Mendy if they qualify for the Champions League. So it will be interesting to see if Antonio Conte's side can hold onto fourth place.
