Ghanaian soccer player Christian Atsu's family and loved ones come together to pay their respects at his funeral at the State House in Accra, Ghana.
Christian Atsu, a soccer star from Ghana, was laid to rest in state on Friday in Accra (March 17th). Following devastating earthquakes that shook Turkey last month, Atsu, a player for the Turkish team Hatayspor, passed unexpectedly. More than 50,000 people have died as a result of the earthquakes, which started on February 6.
President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo presided over the memorial service while Atsu was farewelled by friends, relatives, admirers, and coworkers. The casket was positioned beneath a white tent and covered in the flag colors of Ghana throughout the ceremony.Marie-Claire Rupio, Atsu's widow, paid her final tribute to the Ghanaian hero while sobbing.
"I loved you in life, and I still love you in death. Losing you breaks my heart. You weren't traveling alone. You left me with a piece of you. Even if I can't see you, your love continues to be my compass. I can see your love and grin in the smiles of my kids. You weren't alone when you left; a piece of me departed with you. Your love is still leading me. You seemed unbreakable. I recognize your love and grin in the smiles of our kids."
Atsu played for the Ghanaian national football team throughout his career, earning over 60 caps and scoring 10 goals. Atsu played for Ghana in a number of international competitions during the height of his professional career, including the FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations. The renowned Ghanaian athlete was well-known for his ability to dribble tactically, his ability to find open spaces, and the way he set up his teammates and himself for goals.
