PLAYED OR PLAYED? (CHAPTER 1)

Chapter 1

On that particular day I had tolerated my boss’ advancement too much. I’m in the company  to work and not to engage in any amorous relationship with anyone not to talk of my married boss whose wife was such a pretty damsel. I still don’t know why married men choose to cheat on their wives who are way prettier than the girls they run after.

As I was moving towards the taxi rank where I’d pick a cab to my house, a loud blaring of horns brought me back to my surroundings. How could I have forgotten the road I was using at the moment. The market women around started talking and asking questions about how I had planned to die. In the middle of it all, a very dark handsome guy came down from a Corolla which I  believe blared loudly at me.

“What at all could make a pretty girl like you walk down the road absentmindedly. I could have hit you if I was over-speeding.”

“I’m sorry sir, I didn’t realize I was in the middle of the road.”

“It’s fine. My name is Austin” he said stretching his hand forward for a hand shake. I hesitantly took it and mumbled my name, Liz. He looked at me as if he wanted me to add some more, I just withdrew my hand and began collecting my composure.

“So Liz, can I have your number so we can talk more?”

That question startled me. I was just lost in my own thoughts as I recounted how my ex boyfriend and I broke up. It wasn’t a mutual agreement. I took his phone, the latest iPhone model, sleek, just like its owner. He thanked me and got back into his car while I hurried off to the taxi rank. I’ve been trying to ask myself why Austin reminded me so much of my ex. Dark skinned, bearded with tiny lips and an exceptionally white teeth which shows his diastema, that, my ex boyfriend didn’t have and Austin was much taller.

‘Snap out of it, Liz. You’re better than this’

I wish I could ask my inner self what she meant by better than this. I was just admiring God’s creation with a touch of comparing and

contrasting.

I arrived home quite late than expected as I had to make a quick pass at my favorite kenkey seller’s place else I’d have to go to bed with tea or nothing at all. Thankfully, it is a Friday night which technically gives me a break for the weekend. Halfway through my favorite kenkey, my container of a phone started to ring, I drew closer to see an unknown ID displayed. Boy, my heart leapt for something I can’t describe as joy or even anxiety.

“Hello gorgeous” the caller on the other end said”

“ Hello?”  I said quizzically”

“Don’t tell me you’ve soon forgotten about me. How can one forget this incident?”

“Oh, ermm Austin. Sorry I just wasn’t sure who it was”

“You’re forgiven mi lady” He laughed sweetly after saying this.

“So tell me, what was eating you up so bad that you almost lost your life today?”

“It’s nothing really.”

“C’mon. Don’t be such a hard one to crack.”

“I was just overwhelmed with today’s workload. Nothing interesting”

“Aww poor you.”

I let out a loud chuckle since I didn’t know what else to say. Aside that I still had my kenkey to finish.

“Can we talk later please, I was in the middle of something”

“Is that an excuse to get me off your neck?”

“C’mon don’t be ridiculous, I could have chosen not to answer the call. “

“Alright. Do call me when you’re done.”

“I will.”

‘Good riddance to bad nonsense’ I sighed and went back to eating my all time favorite. I was beginning to enjoy it when a notification popped on my phone. Reluctantly, I picked it up only to see a shocking text from Austin.

‘What is this boy up to?’
