Phil Foden scored two times and Kevin De Bruyne added late sparkle as the six-time FA Cup champs finished Bristol City's unbeaten 12-game run before a capacity swarm in the West Country.
The scoreline was unforgiving on the hosts, who fell behind to Foden's seventh-minute strike and remained in the challenge into the last quarter. Yet, Foden's redirected strike a short ways from time and a fine De Bruyne finish guaranteed the guests' spot in the last eight.
De Bruyne returned subsequent to missing two games through sickness and captained a Manchester City side appearance five changes from Saturday's Head Association success at Bournemouth. Britain midfielder Kalvin Phillips made his second beginning since leaving Leeds the previous summer as Ederson, Erling Haaland, Ilkay Gundogan, Jack Grealish and Rodri started the night on the seat.
Phillips not set in stone to dazzle after his physical issue inconveniences and just 63 seconds had passed when he struck the crossbar from 25 yards. Riyad Mahrez worked a cunning one-two with De Bruyne and the Algerian's cross to the far post was cleared high into the net by Foden, who scored for the second progressive game. Bristol City's reaction was a boisterous punishment yell after Imprint Sykes went head to head with Rico Lewis. It seemed a genuine allure yet ref Andre Marriner was unaffected and, with no VAR in activity, home fans were left disappointed.
Julian Alvarez miskicked before the home objective from Foden's cross, yet Bristol City were vindicating themselves well and getting a decent lot of happiness down their left flank. Alex Scott took shots directly at Stefan Ortega and Ringer discharged over after Tomas Kalas got De Bruyne under lock and key.
Manchester City's aggressive message was likewise obvious as Mahrez saw his volley took off the line by Kalas and Ruben Dias tried Max O'Leary with a header. Mahrez was showing up in English football and Robins supervisor Nigel Pearson, who marked him for Leicester in 2014 from French club Le Havre, couldn't avoid having a word with the Algerian when he went to ground following a touchline challenge from Cameron Pring.
Ederson supplanted Ortega at half-time and Manchester City assumed responsibility for the challenge without working O'Leary until Alvarez constrained him into a save low to one side. Foden was gotten late and got moment revenge on Sykes to procure a yellow card and something from his chief Kick Guardiola to remain on track.
