Loyalty in modern football is rarer than before because a lot of money is spent during the transfer window to sign players and wages.
However, some players have been able to challenge what has become the status quo over the past decade by staying at a particular club for more than seven years. We will look at some of them in this article.
In the big clubs in Europe, Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets is the oldest star. The Spanish midfielder graduated from the prestigious La Masia academy and since joining the first team in 2008, he has been the mainstay of the team. This season is his 15th season at the club.
Real Madrid star Karim Benzema is another player who has proven his loyalty by staying at one club for a long time. The Frenchman is in his 14th year at the Santiago Bernabeu and with the club unwilling to let him leave anytime soon, he could well retire at the club.
Bayern Munich legend Thomas Muller is another player who has shown loyalty to a particular club. The German international graduated from the academy of the German Bundesliga club and since joining the team in 2009, he has been a mainstay. He has had more than 13 years at the German club.
Spanish midfielder and Atletico Madrid legend, Koke is another player who has spent most of his career at one club. The Spain international is in his 12th year at the Civitas Metropolitano stadium.
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea are also players who have proven their loyalty to a club with a long tenure. Both stars have spent 11 years at their current clubs. A veteran Barcelona defender, Jordi Alba also spent 11 years with the La Liga giants.
Chelsea captain Cesar Azpiliqueta and star Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti are footballers who have spent nine years at their current club.
