Erik ten Hag, according to Paul Scholes, needs to "find a better right-back" this year in order to maximize Jadon Sancho's potential.
Sancho chose to take a break from football after worries about his wellbeing surfaced. Sancho, who transferred from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United in 2021 for £73 million, missed the beginning of the season.
The 21-year-old has played 24 times this season and appears to be one of United's most talented young players. Since returning from that break, he has scored twice in five league games, and he has established himself as a regular starter in Ten Hag's starting eleven.
But Scholes thinks the winger still has more to offer and that he needs better players to surround him.
The former Manchester United midfielder responded, "Not yet, I don't believe, I still think there's a lot more to come from him," when asked by BT Sport if Sancho had accomplished enough this year.
He undoubtedly had troubles and concerns that the manager had to deal with, but he recovered and scored a few goals.
"I still believe a player is there; he just needs the proper teammates to surround him," the author said.
Marcus Rashford was replaced by Sancho during Man United's 1-0 victory over Real Betis on Thursday.
His football career began with Watford, then in 2014, he transferred to Manchester City's development program.
Sancho dazzled scouts with his superb skill and goal-scoring abilities, earning himself a transfer to Borussia Dortmund in 2017. He would go on to return an impressive 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 games there.
Scholes thinks Man United need more excellent players around Sancho to get the most out of the young winger. At the time, Sancho had a number of excellent players around him, including players like Achraf Hakimi and Erling Haaland.
"Remember at Dortmund before, he had a flying right-back going on all the time, which really helped him because he's not a speedy guy, he's more of a skillful player who wants to play football, he wants to play with his center-forward and right-back," the author said.
If United can locate a better right-back, that might change the situation for him.
After a period of injury that kept him out earlier this season, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been chosen over Diogo Dalot at the right-back position this season, despite the fact that there is presently a lot of contention for spots in United's starting eleven.
Wout Weghorst has secured Ten Hag's team's center-forward position up top.
Yet, despite making eight appearances in the Premier League, the towering striker has not scored as frequently as his boss would have liked so far this season.
Sancho will face continued difficulty breaking into the Red Devils' forward line as players like Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, and Facundo Pellistri compete for a position in Ten Hag's assault.
