Fraud is a pervasive problem affecting individuals and organizations worldwide; unfortunately, students are not immune to it. Recently, a student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana fell victim to a fraudulent scheme, losing a significant amount of money. She lost GH? 16,000.00 to fraudsters.
On Wednesday of last week, an incident occurred at the SRC Hostel. A female victim had an encounter with a middle-aged man who asked for directions to a church program while pretending to be lost. Later, another man arrived and asked the same questions to both the female victim and the first man.
As the female victim was about to leave, the middle-aged man called her back and advised her not to share personal details with her friends or use other people's combs for her hair. He also warned her not to walk barefoot. The man then asked her to bring out all her belongings, claiming that someone close to her was trying to kill her and instructed the other man to recite the Lord's prayer three times at a particular spot.
After the young man returned, the middle-aged man asked the female victim to do the same. However, when she returned, both men had disappeared, along with her phone, ATM card, and other personal belongings. The victim tried to block transactions on her ATM card, but it was too late, and all the money in her account, which was 8k, was gone. Her phone, which also cost 8K (GH? 8,000.00), was also missing, leaving her with a total loss of 16K (GH? 16,000.00).
Fraud is a serious issue that affects individuals and organizations worldwide, and students are not exempt from its impact. The case of the student at KNUST who was defrauded of 16 thousand Ghana cedis (GH? 16,000.00) is a reminder of the need for heightened awareness and vigilance when it comes to financial transactions. To prevent similar incidents, it is essential for individuals to be informed about the different types of fraudulent schemes and how they can protect themselves. Reporting incidents of fraud to the appropriate authorities is crucial in bringing perpetrators to justice and preventing future occurrences.
