In Damongo, in the Savanna Region, a traditional showcase and coronation ritual yesterday concluded with the enskinment of a new overlord of the Gonja Kingdom with the skin title Yagbonwura Bi-Kunuto Jewu Soale I.

With the passing of Yagbonwura Tuntumba Boresa I last month, a new Yagbonwura was enskinned.

A significant contingent of dignitaries from all walks of life attended the colorful event, which was held to showcase the culture of the Gonja people.

The Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahohuo Yaw Gyebi II, and Stephen Asamoah Boateng, the incoming Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, were among the visitors.

Chiefs, ministers of state, members of parliament, political party officials, and the clergy, among others, mostly from northern Ghana, attended the event as well.

Enskinment

The Yagbonwura was enskinned behind closed doors after customary procedures the day before the coronation in Damongo.

The culmination was afterward led in a parade to Damongo, where hundreds of people lined the streets to see the new Overlord. It was carried on a horse.

Yagbonwura Soale I praised his predecessor for a great reign in his opening speech and promised to carry on his good deeds.

"I will endeavor to safeguard the integrity of the Jakpa Palace and the Gonja Kingdom," he said urgently.

To promote the growth of the Kingdom, he promised to engage with the government and many stakeholders. He said: "I would endeavor to settle issues,

bolster Gonjaland's territorial defenses and encourage rapid growth.

The Yagbonwura advocated for peaceful coexistence among the people while praising the kingmakers and other significant figures for a smooth transition. They said that their biggest adversary was poverty, hence everyone needed to work together to eradicate it.

Support

Dr. Bawumia congratulated the new Yagbonwura and assured him that the government will provide the necessary assistance and support for him to realize his goals.

We may come from various tribes, but we are still one people, he continued. As such, we must constantly keep in mind that poverty is our enemy and that we should all focus on that battle rather than ourselves.

The former president Mahama also welcomed and wished the new Yagbonwura well in his position.

"Since it is not the same in many traditional places, I am really glad to call myself a Gonja today.

When a monarch passes away, it is often a time of strife where fatalities are possible.

We may all be happy with how smoothly our new Overlord was selected and installed "stated the previous president.
