The iconic 35-year-old departed to Paris in the summer of 2021 after Barcelona's shaky financial state left them unable to negotiate a new deal, bringing down the curtain on a 21-year affiliation with the club.
Messi's departure shocked the football community because he had been expected to play his whole career with Barcelona, according to club officials, fans, and the player himself.
Alongside Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, he arrived in Paris with the goal of helping PSG win the Champions League for the first time. However, after losing to Bayern Munich in the round of 16 of this season's tournament, PSG is no closer to realizing that goal.
Although PSG have a 12-month extension option that Messi must also agree to, the Ligue 1 giants have attempted to negotiate new terms with the Argentine, his father, and his representatives. Messi's contract is officially up in the summer. After his excellent return from the World Cup, they even thought they were getting close to a deal.
Yet if discussions over a new contract have been polite, PSG's dreams of locking Messi down have soon gone and talks have been made with other interested parties.
Saudi Arabian outfit Al Ittihad have presented a bid, while David Beckham controlled Inter Miami have also put in propositions to Messi - all of which have been considered.
But it's a fantasy homecoming to Barcelona that is beginning to look more and more likely, with the Catalan giants desperate to restore Messi to where they feel is his home
Even before the World Cup, Barcelona president Joan Laporta made it known that he wanted to re-sign Messi, and sources have revealed to 90min that the player's stance on working with Laporta has softened. Actually, his father Jorge met with Laporta recently for talks and they are thought to have gone well.
Messi is currently back in his homeland readying to play for Argentina in friendlies against Panama and Curacao - his first outings since the World Cup - and two goals in those games will make him just the third player ever, behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Ali Daei, to have scored 100 international goals.
