BIOGRAPHY OF POPE FRANCIS (II)
Pope Francis, whose birth name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was
born on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was one of five
children born to Italian immigrants. As a young man, he worked briefly as a chemical
technician before entering the seminary and studying for the priesthood.
In 1969, Pope Francis was ordained a priest for the Jesuit
order. He went on to serve as a professor, rector, and provincial superior for
the Jesuits in Argentina. In 1992, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Buenos
Aires, and in 1998, he became archbishop of Buenos Aires.
In 2001, Pope Francis was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul
II. As a cardinal, he was known for his advocacy on behalf of the poor and
marginalized, his commitment to interfaith dialogue, and his opposition to
corruption and human rights abuses.
In March 2013, Pope Francis was elected as the 266th Pope of
the Roman Catholic Church, succeeding Pope Benedict XVI. He is the first Pope
from the Americas and the first Jesuit Pope.
Since his election, Pope Francis has been known for his
emphasis on social justice, his concern for the environment, and his efforts to
reform the Vatican bureaucracy. He has also made headlines for his statements
on controversial issues, such as the role of women in the Church, the treatment
of LGBT individuals, and the refugee crisis.
Pope Francis has become a popular and influential figure not only within the Catholic Church but also around the world, and he is widely seen as a leader who is committed to promoting compassion, humility, and social responsibility.
Pope Francis resides in the Vatican City, which is the smallest independent state in the world and is located within the city of Rome, Italy. The Vatican City is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church and the residence of the Pope. The Pope's official residence within the Vatican is the Apostolic Palace, which includes various apartments and offices, as well as the Sistine Chapel, where Papal conclaves are held. However, it's worth noting that the Pope travels frequently for official visits and engagements both within Italy and around the world.
