Raphael Varane has identified the two teams he might eventually leave Manchester United for.

After having a difficult first season in England, the French defender has become a key member of Erik ten Hag's Manchester United team this year.

He played the whole ninety minutes in their 2-0 victory over Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final, and his Premier League games have helped the team maintain its top-four standing.

The World Cup champion seemed to have found a home at Old Trafford, but Varane's admission that he would consider retiring elsewhere raises the possibility that things could change.

Varane stated in an interview with GQ Magazine: "I will finish my career either in Madrid, Manchester, or Lens. I won't join any other clubs besides those.

Yet Madrid strikes me as being challenging. Typically, players don't return there. Today, my finishing [my club career] with either Manchester or Lens is the most likely scenario.

In July 2021, Varane will leave Real Madrid for a £42 million move to Old Trafford after ten years at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The French defender had a successful career in Spain, winning the Club World Cup four times, the Champions League four times, and LaLiga three times.

Before going to Madrid in 2011, he spent a year playing in their first team after graduating from the RC Lens academy in France.

He has played for the Red Devils in 56 games across all competitions, and he acknowledged in the same interview that the recent fixture overload has been affecting him.

The most recent seasons have always started sooner and ended later. While we weren't playing, we only had time for rest because we didn't have time to engage in physical activity.

'You can do this for a few seasons, but eventually you crash, or you're on the field for six months or a year and you're not the same player you were, or you get hurt. All great players experience that, and that is what I want to avoid.

Similar admissions were made by Varane last month when he announced the end of his international career, which France manager Didier Deschamps said left him upset.
