Ford's New Roof Rack Fits Every Model Perfectly Ford has patented a modular assembly system for roof racks that lets you customize the rack's size and accessories to meet your needs. After the USPTO published the patent on March 16, which described this modular rack and some of the accessories it might be able to access, CarBuzz found it.
Ford explains in detail the advantages of a modular rack, which can be installed on a variety of vehicles and accommodate loads of varying sizes. By being compatible with a wide range of Ford automobiles, the one-size-fits-all application also helps cut costs.
The basic idea is straightforward: Multiple crossbars are housed in an outer frame with four sides. The rack attaches at the front to a mounting system above the windshield, and at the back, it attaches to what Ford calls a removable roof. This suggests that the Ford Bronco, which already has more than 160 accessories available for the off-roader, may be the first vehicle to feature this feature. Both the two-door and four-door versions could be fitted with a single roof rack.
In base structure, the rooftop rack would be moderately smaller, yet its virtuoso lies in the way that it very well may be broadened. By eliminating the back external edge, extenders to the side rails can be fitted with extra crossbars opening into these. The back edge can then be re-connected to finish the more extended rack. Screws would be used to mechanically fasten the various rails components.
The most well-known accessory that can be added to the roof rack is a side ladder. A ladder that occupies the same space can be installed in place of one of the extensions. If you had used your FordPass points to buy a roof tent for your overlanding adventures, this would be ideal.
Further extras - like the tent - could undoubtedly be fastened through an endorsed T-channel inside the side rails. In addition to fitting the crossbars, this T-channel would make it simple to attach various roof boxes, tents, light bars, and other accessories. The two systems could work together to expand the range of accessories and their capabilities, especially if Ford develops a system that supplies power to the roof rails.
Ford would supply a rubber or plastic channel plug that, when not in use, fits into the T-channel to close it. This prevents water and dirt from entering the channel and reduces wind noise that is whistling through it as you drive.
The concept is even simpler than the invention. However, it is a novel concept that may enhance the quality of life of outdoor enthusiasts.
