Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record playing his 197th game for Portugal, while Lionel Messi celebrated Argentina's return to the World Cup with his 800th career goal.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi made more history in a double celebration for football legends.

The Portuguese forward marked his 197th appearance for the national team with two goals against Liechtenstein. And the Argentinian ended his country's World Cup comeback party with his 800th goal with a direct free kick into the top corner.

Ronaldo, who currently plays for Saudi side Al-Nassr, also became the first player to score 100 goals in international tournaments - and 120 in all. And the former Manchester United and Real Madrid superstar, 38, has scored 20 years in a row for Portugal since they first scored in the Euro 2004 group stage. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner posted on Instagram:

"It's great to be playing again and scoring for our national team and in a special stadium for me. Proud to be the most capped player ever.

A seven-time Ballon d'Or winner, Messi hit the post twice in the match against Panama before scoring a free-kick in the 89th minute in Buenos Aires. Messi, 35, has scored 672 goals in 778 appearances for Barcelona and has scored 30 since joining Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.

After his 99th goal for his country, an emotional Messi told the sold-out crowd at the Monumental Stadium:

"I've always dreamed of this moment, celebrating with you guys. To come to my country and lift the Copa America, the Finalissima and the greatest of all trophies, the World Cup. "I know this is a day for us to celebrate, but I don't want to forget all the teammates who were here before, who also worked so hard to achieve this and we were very close before. They deserve all the recognition from the Argentinian fans because they have always tried their best for this shirt color."

Ronaldo officially became the first person to score 800 goals in December 2021, although the late Pelé claims to have scored more than 1,000 goals in his career.

Coach Lionel Scaloni, who chose the same starting line-up as the World Cup final, also couldn't hold back his tears.

"Eternal gratitude goes to these players. Football belongs to them, and without them we wouldn't have won the World Cup."

The post-match celebration saw Panama players fight over Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez's shirt - while Emi Martinez and several teammates reenacted the infamous Golden Glove celebration his own by imitating the World Cups.

Messi, who will have a chance to score his 100th goal for Argentina against Curacao on Tuesday, is out of contract in Paris this summer. And fellow Argentinian Sergio Aguero said:

"My feeling is that he has a 50% chance of returning to Barcelona. I think Leo should retire at Barca."
