According to a report, Liverpool are planning sweeping changes this summer when Jurgen Klopp told a defender he was part of a nine-man release plan.
The Reds have had a disappointing season, falling short of their usual high standards under Klopp. Indeed, they currently face a huge battle to break into the top four and bring Champions League football back to Anfield next season.
They are currently sixth in the table and seven points behind Tottenham in fourth, although there are two games left to play. However, the biggest threat could come from Newcastle, who have played the same number of games as the Red Devils and are now just two points behind Spurs. To illustrate their dramatic decline, Liverpool have lost the FA Cup and Carabao Cup they won last season. And their Champions League adventure was cut short in the first knockout round as Real Madrid won 6-2 on aggregate.
As a result, the club is set to embark on a major rebuilding program this summer.
And Klopp is looking to bolster his midfield with at least two new players wanted in the engine room.
Ultimately, Jude Bellingham is the top target, although the Dortmund teen could cost upwards of £100m. Furthermore, Klopp is also suing two Wolves players, with talk of a £80m double raid this week accelerating.
However, Klopp also wants to strengthen the central defence. Finally, the Reds boss is eyeing some potential improvements to an area where his side is usually very strong.
Liverpool told defender he was one of seven to leave
To help deliver such deals, player sales could be just as important to Liverpool as the arrivals.
And with FSG looking to attract new investors to fund their deals, money is likely to be relatively tight for Merseysiders. However, the owners will do everything for Liverpool to compete for the main kick.
But in reality, Bellingham's arrival may limit what they can do in the summer transfer window. As such, player sales could also provide a welcome addition to Klopp's prize pool.
Finally, three departures have been confirmed at Anfield this summer. Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Roberto Firmino will all leave at the end of their contracts. Firmino in particular has been a big part of their success in recent years and will leave Merseyside as a true legend.
Now it looks like the trio will be joined by six other players.
First and foremost, Klopp is set to show the possibility of three centre-backs this summer with Football Insider reporting that Rhys Williams has been told he has no future at the club.
The 22-year-old has only made 19 appearances for Liverpool and is far below his professional level.
Indeed, he spent the first half of the 2022/23 season at Blackpool before being recalled by the Reds. Liverpool are looking to raise money for a transfer
It is now reported that the Seasiders are interested in signing Williams permanently this summer.
He will be joined by Nat Phillips, who is likely to claim a fee of around £12m. West Ham and Newcastle are among his pursuers.
And Liverpool will also be listening to offers for Joel Matip, whose contract expires in the summer of 2024. The former Cameroon defender has struggled to find his best form this season. Klopp will also be reluctant to buy Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
No. 2 Red Devils have never let anyone down when called up. However, he needs to play regularly and Klopp will now allow him to leave if an attractive offer is received.
