The Chilean moved to England from Barcelona in 2014 and joined Arsenal after a standout World Cup run.

Despite having one year left on his contract, Sanchez attempted to leave the Gunners in the summer of 2017 after establishing himself as one of the best players in the Premier League during his first three seasons there.

He and former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola were frequently mentioned as potential teammates at Man City. Late in the transfer window, a deal appeared to be in the works, but Arsenal's attempts to replace him failed, and the transfer failed. Raheem Sterling and Thomas Lemar were both strongly linked to moves to the Emirates Stadium.

Man City had renewed hopes of landing Sanchez when the January transfer window opened, but Man United outbid them.

Sanchez spoke about this transfer story in an interview with TVN, Chile's state broadcaster.

"I was on my way to the City. Every time I spoke to Guardiola, he wished me a happy birthday. He was my father at Barcelona and City, and he was like my father there "Sanchez started.

"He sent me texts when we spoke frequently and every day. And everything was prepared; a player who would join Arsenal was present. Then [Arsene] Wenger informs me that you are staying because they do not have a replacement player and the other player did not want to come.

"The phone suddenly starts to ring. [Jose] "Alexis, here is the [number] seven ready for you," Mourinho says to me.

There wasn't a financial issue, as everyone is aware. United and City experienced the same thing. He then remarked, "Here are the seven; we're playing in the Champions League, and we're going to give it our all." At that point, I wanted to leave, but I was obligated by Guardiola's word.

"At that point, I thought to myself, 'This has never happened: a Chilean football player playing for Manchester United. That was a dream team with seven players, including [Eric] Cantona, [David] Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, and now a Chilean.

"Things happen for a reason; I don't regret moving to United. Yes, I would have wanted to visit City. By now, we would have captured the Champions League.
