As Kyle Walker played the entire 90 minutes of Thursday's 2-1 victory away at Italy, the right-back was anticipated to start Sunday's Euro 2024 qualifying match against Ukraine at Wembley. James, though, will meet up with Chelsea once more at their Cobham training facility after failing to demonstrate his fitness.

An English statement read: "Reece James is no longer a member of the England team and won't play against Ukraine on Sunday.

"The full-back has returned to Chelsea for evaluation on a persistent problem.

Luke Shaw, who is suspended, and the rest of the team are continuing their pregame preparations at the Tottenham Hotspur Training Site with no substitutes anticipated.

James joined the England team this week despite having a spotty fitness history and dealing with a hamstring injury earlier this month. He had played the full 90 minutes in two of Chelsea's final three games before the international break and was presumed to be in good health.

On Thursday, he replaced Bukayo Saka in the 85th minute as England, down to ten men, attempted to maintain their lead.

James suffered a knee injury in the fall and was unable to participate in England's 2022 World Cup campaign.

James' condition will be closely watched by Chelsea as they prepare for a hectic month that will see them play teams like Arsenal, Liverpool, and Real Madrid.

This season, James has already missed 17 games for Chelsea, 15 due to a knee injury, one due to a hamstring ailment, and one due to illness.

James missed a total of 51 games for the Blues before this season due to nine further ailments that were documented throughout his time in the Chelsea senior setup.

Reece James leaves the England team because of a "ongoing issue"

Reece James' withdrawal from the team means that England manager Gareth Southgate will only have 18 outfield players to choose from for their match against Ukraine, according to Rob Dorsett.
