The year 2022 for most Senior High School candidates was quite challenging. Majority of them appeared not well prepared for the West Africa Senior High School examination.
There were some, who had decided to resort to short-cuts to make passing the WASSCE quite easy to attain.
Among same students, there were some candidates, who had resolved to genuinely weather their way through the storm to perform exceptionally.
Across West Africa, the final Senior High School Certificate examination started on the 1st of August to the 27th of September, 2022 at all specified centres in all West African schools, of which Ghana was part.
Following the examination period, qualified examiners were tasked to carefully assess and award the performances of the candidates deservedly. This lasted for about a month.
Not long enough, from the 29th of November to the 3rd of December, 2022, the results were released pending several rectifications that were being carried out. Most students who had taken part in the 2022 West Africa Senior High School Certificate examination were so anxious to know their fate. For some, after they had checked,, they had done quite well; for others, things did not go as planned or were expected. So, they felt disappointed.
The 2022 survey carried out by the West Africa Examination Council revealed that, among the huge number of candidates, who had taken part in the West Africa Senior High School Certificate Examination, there were some of them who had performed very exceptionally. The first three positions were considered for awarding.
Interesting enough, two of those high performing students were Ghanaians from the same school, namely St. James Seminary Senior High School, which is located in Sunyani, in the Bono region of Ghana. The first position was secured by Alex Opoku Manu, whereas the second position was occupied by Benjamin Eyram Nana Kwame Degbey. The third position was taken by a female Nigerian candidate namely Odigigbo Chioma Blessing.
In their honor, an award ceremony was held at the the 71st West African Examination Council annual meeting in Banjul, Gambia, which was officially launched by the Gambian President, His Excellency Adama Barrow. This session lasted for 5 days, which actually began on the 13th to the 17th of March, 2023.
Key members present in the delegation that represented Ghana at the award ceremony were the Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Dr. Eric Nkansah and the headmaster of Opoku Ware Senior High School, Father Owusu Sekyere.
