In a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he understood Russia's plans to reduce barriers to Russian food exports as part of the grain deal, according to the Kremlin, TASS reported.
"The Turkish leader welcomed Russia's willingness to extend the Istanbul accords on the shipment of Ukrainian grain from Black Sea ports and to unblock Russian food and fertilizer exports," the Kremlin said in a statement issued after the phone chat.
Erdogan's office said earlier on Saturday that the Turkish president had complimented Putin for his good approach toward extending the Black Sea grain initiative.
Arrangements to export food from Ukraine were made in Istanbul on July 22, 2022 for a period of 120 days, which was extended for another 120 days in November. One of the agreements establishes a system for grain exports from the Kiev-controlled ports of Odessa, Chernomorsk, and Yuzhny. Russia and the UN also agreed to work together to eliminate limitations on the export of Russian agricultural goods and fertilizers to global markets. Russia has stated that the Memorandum of Understanding has not been fulfilled.
On March 18, Russia declared that the grain arrangement will be extended for 60 days, citing the need for an objective review of how their communication to the UN was executed.
The Turkish President also hailed Russia's assistance in mediating the rehabilitation of relations between Turkey and Syria.
According to the Kremlin, the two presidents underscored "the necessity to keep the process of mending relations between Turkey and Syria going. To that end, Turkey's president emphasized Russia's helpful role as a mediator."
