Joselu was never able to leave and spent two unconvincing years at Stoke City before struggling again at Newcastle.
But he found his form at club level in Spain and played at such a high level that he was called up to the national team for the first time at the age of 32.
After replacing Alvaro Morata on the bench, he made Spanish history by becoming the oldest Spanish debutant since September 2006. But Joselu didn't just rest on that fact and made even more headlines when he scored twice after being substituted in the 81st minute in a Euro qualifier against Norway.
As Spain took a 1-0 lead thanks to Dani Olmo, Joselu needed just minutes to score his first international goal for his country as he picked up the pass and delivered a superb header from the post. .
He was surrounded by teammates after the goal.
But things improved just two minutes after compatriot Mikel Oyarzabal was released and his shot was saved by the Norwegian keeper.

Fans have admired a man who failed to make it to the Premier League but now looks to be a star for club and country.
One person said:
"This guy couldn't even pass the ball into the Newcastle net. What a turn-around."
Another added:
"Age is just a number."
As one Newcastle fan put it:
"Truly one of the most limited and incompetent strikers I've ever seen. Some turn around, play fair."
Others couldn't help but compare the underrated Joselu to Norway's main goalkeeper Erling Haaland, who was dropped from the team due to injury.
One of them joked that Joselu was 'better than Haaland'. While another simply said:
"Joselu > Haaland".
Currently the number one striker for Spanish side Espanyol, Joselu has scored 12 goals in 23 La Liga games this season.
