Liverpool appear to have been hoping to land one of Jurgen Klopp's best midfield targets this summer following a report on Monday night.
The Reds boss has made renovating the engine room his top priority after a struggling season that saw the club struggle to break into the top four in the latter stages of the campaign.
Famed for the energy and pressure from midfield in previous seasons, this aspect of Liverpool's play seems to have disappeared as an aging midfielder struggles week in and week out.
This led to the Germans already starting to plan for next season. And while the signing of top target Jude Bellingham is almost certainly indisputable, given Dortmund's current view of the Englishman, Klopp has other targets he is pursuing. One of them is Brighton's impressive star, Alexis Mac Allister and according to the latest rumors, a deal could happen.
Football Insider says the 24-year-old World Cup champion who is the Seagulls' top star is most likely to leave at the end of the season as his contract continues to expire.
The Argentina international's current contract runs for two more years from this summer, leaving Brighton 'vulnerable' to offers if the player actively starts demanding a departure.
Reportedly, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus are all racing to sign Mac Allister this summer. Meanwhile, Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez has also called on his current club to make a move for his international team-mate. Football Insider reported in early March that the player is "ready to move to" a bigger club, with Brighton likely to demand around £70m for his services.
Mac Allister in Brighton's star quartet in sale talks
However, Mac Allister is not the only Brighton star targeted by big clubs, with Moises Caicedo, Kaoru Mitoma and striker Evan Ferguson also attracting attention.
That means the Argentinian is most likely to leave given the status of the other three.
Caicedo, who was chased by Arsenal and Liverpool in January, has signed a new four-year contract at the Amex Stadium - while Mitoma and Ferguson prepare for impending talks over a possible move term after they advance rapidly.
Winger Solly March has also extended his contract until 2026 following interest from Newcastle United. Brighton have recently made a good profit selling some of their big names including Ben White, Yves Bissouma, Marc Cucurella and Leandro Trossard.
And it looks like Mac Allister could be next, if the player wants to withdraw and Brighton decides to withdraw.
That could be huge news for Liverpool, should the midfielder come to Merseyside. However, with so many clubs likely to be involved to sign the deal, Klopp may have a compelling reason to prove he is willing to get the Reds back on track.
