Liverpool have been dealt a blow ahead of their next Premier League game against Manchester City.

Liverpool will face Man City at the Etihad on Saturday in a game that could have a major impact on the title race and the battle for a top-four finish.

City are eight points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal after playing one game less but could close that gap to just five points if they beat Liverpool - when the Gunners face Leeds late in the afternoon .

Meanwhile, Liverpool are seven points behind the Champions League spot and will be desperate for a positive result this weekend, with games against Chelsea and Arsenal coming up.

The Reds are said to be without midfielder Thiago Alcantara when moving to Manchester. Football Insider claimed the Spaniard did not recover from a hip injury in time to feature in the match.

Thiago suffered a hip injury after Liverpool's 3-0 loss to Wolves at Molineux in February.

It was initially reported that he was sidelined for four weeks, with Liverpool medical staff hoping he could return to play for the first team after an international break.

But he has yet to return to training with the first team and is therefore unlikely to play against Man City.

Diaz lined up to return

However, Liverpool could welcome the return of winger Luis Diaz, who has been sidelined since October after sustaining a knee injury against Arsenal. The Colombian has recently returned to light training and is likely to feature against City, although Jurgen Klopp is unlikely to press him if his fitness is in doubt.

Man City are not without injury problems, with Erling Haaland having a late fitness test.

The Norwegian Football Association announced last Monday that Haaland will not be participating in the Euro 2024 qualifiers against Spain and Georgia after suffering groin discomfort during their training camp in Marbella.

The striker has been sent for tests at Barcelona and is now facing a race against time to be deemed fit to face Liverpool, with Haaland's father admitting it was a 'touch and go' if he joins.
