Barcelona is anticipated to file a complaint with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) in an effort to win back the 1937 league championship.
Due to the Spanish Civil War, the RFEF was halted between 1936 and 1939; however, a few cup tournaments were held concurrently, along with the Mediterranean League, which unofficially replaced La Liga.
Barcelona won the Mediterranean League in 1937, but because it wasn't an RFEF-sanctioned competition, it hasn't been included to their total of 26 league championships.
Although ESPN reports that Barcelona is poised to appeal to the RFEF in an effort to be officially recognized as the national champions that season and raise their total to 27, they may be about to reverse that.
Barcelona, who tried unsuccessfully to have this championship credited to them in 2009, thinks the RFEF has established a recent precedent that entitles them to claiming the title.
Even though it wasn't an official RFEF competition, Levante recently received the honor of winning the 1937 Free Spain Cup, which replaced what is now known as the Copa del Rey. Another unofficial cup competition, the 1912 Concurso de Espana, with Deportivo de la Coruna as the champion.
Barcelona is believed to believe that they must be recognized as the league champions for 1937 now that Levante and Deportivo are permitted by the RFEF to claim victories in these unofficial competitions.
Barcelona is ranked second in the standings behind Real Madrid, who have 35 trophies to their credit, with 26 league titles officially won to date.
With a 12-point advantage at the top of the standings, Xavi's team is the favorite to win the title this year, although Barcelona would like to add one more trophy to their collection.
Barcelona makes an RFEF claim for the 1937 league championship.
Eric Garcia, a defender for Barcelona, claims he is content with his performance this year.
There have been rumors that Barca may try to sell Garcia in order to balance the books and meet the requirements of LaLiga's financial fair play.
