In about five years ago, the Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs (MIWE) revealed that almost half of the business in Ghana are owned by women. Ten African countries made a list with Ghana ranking the highest with 46% of women own business. This is not surprising, given the country is a lower-middle income and factor driven. Women have to engage in business out of their sheer will to survive and support one self and family. The activities are often operated in the informal micro to medium scale agriculture manufacturing and services sector of the economy and take them to self employment as opposed them to job creation or business growth. Here in Ghana women play the role of farm owners, farm partners and farm laborers. This contribution is estimated to account for around 70% to 80% of food consumed in the country. Simply put, they provide food for living. They have also become increasingly responsible for the education and other materials needs of their wards, especially in the female headed household or family. This means that: When it comes to the hustle, Ghanaian women do it best. Women in Ghana find it difficult to see their wards struggle on the street to make living so rather, they go out there to make sure they provide for the family at large. It’s the most important thing of every Ghanaian parent to provide, the market of Ghana is 90% women.
