Marc Skinner's 12-month contract extension option has been exercised by Manchester United, ensuring that he will continue to serve as manager through at least the year 2024.

Following Casey Stoney's resignation in 2021, Skinner was chosen to take her place. She signed a two-year contract with a third-year option.

The 40-year-old has already expressed his wish to remain at the organization and carry on the initiative that has allowed United to seriously threaten the WSL's established order this season. As noted in January, discussions over a new deal that would extend past 2024 had already begun.

On Thursday morning, Skinner said, "I have an option in my contract that has been taken up, so it's already fixed for next year." This came ahead of the weekend's WSL trip to Brighton.

We are considering discussing a potential new deal, but we now have too much on our plates, he continued.

"I'm incredibly pleased with the progress we've achieved. We're here to help the players and the club succeed. You can see our entire style, but I believe we're still only halfway to where I want to be with rotating systems and opponents not realizing what we can do in the coming years.

As United aims to be "successful for many years to come," Skinner claimed that he will be the "constant within the team" even though some players may be moving this summer and new ones are expected to arrive.

In a prior conversation on his future, Skinner stated the hope that the obvious improvement made by his team this year has served as "indicators" to the club hierarchy that he should stay.

"I'm hoping that there are a lot of indicators as to why we should be here for a long time," he said at the time. "I'm hoping that the qualities we're putting out on the field, the consistency, the clean sheets, the goals, the way we perform, the fan growth."

Which Man Utd players' contracts expire in 2023?

Given that several key players for United are approaching the end of their contracts, the club's participation in the Champions League is expected to have a big impact on who stays and who moves on during the summer transfer window.

When her contract ends at the end of June, Alessia Russo, for whom United turned down two record-breaking offers from Arsenal in January, might still walk away as a free agent. The same can be said for fullback Ona Batlle, who is frequently associated with his hometown team Barcelona.

To retain them with the club for this season, the 12-month extension options that were once a requirement in all United Women contracts have already been exercised.
