Mason Greenwood has been informed that he won't be able to train with Manchester United again until at least the next season since the club's international investigation into his rape arrest is not expected to be finished before the summer.

The 21-year-old striker has been on United's suspension list since January 2022, when allegations of attempted rape and assault first surfaced, leading to his arrest and subsequent charges. However, last month, Greater Manchester Police dropped all of those charges.

Greenwood is believed to have had lengthy conversations with United officials in recent weeks during which he reiterated his wish to return as soon as possible and his dedication to staying at Old Trafford, where he has a contract through 2025.

The club is emphatic that they won't hurry into a decision, though, and they're still doing their due research on the circumstances surrounding his arrest and his behavior off the field.

Greenwood presents United with a challenging moral, interpersonal, business, and financial conundrum, and the club is aware that if it makes a controversial choice in the next two months, it may jeopardize their efforts to qualify for the Champions League as well as their efforts in the FA Cup and Europa League.

The club is said to be divided on the matter, with football department employees believing that he should be given a second chance and commercial executives being more cautious due to worries about the possible harm to United's brand.

After the allegations first surfaced, Greenwood lost his sponsorship from Nike, EA Sports, and Cadbury. His shirt is no longer available for purchase, but his number 11 squad number has not been changed.

Even though he has spoken to Greenwood since the charges were dropped last month, Erik Ten Hag has steadfastly refrained from commenting on the player's future, maintaining that it is a matter for the club's hierarchy.

The former England under-21 striker has continued to be paid his £70,000 weekly salary despite being placed on administrative leave. His contract has an estimated remaining value of £8.1 million, which the club may be required to pay off if they decide to fire him at the end of the current campaign.

United opted not to respond.
