GLAZERS' MAN UTD PRICE TAG LAUGHED OFF AS CLUB'S FINANCIAL MESS LAID BARE

The price of the Glazer house at Manchester United has been mocked by a football finance expert.

The American team owners at Old Trafford announced they were exploring "strategic alternatives" for the club in November.

Since then, British petrochemical billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim have launched revised bids to buy the Premier League giants.

The Glazers will be looking for £6 billion if they leave United, which would be a world record for the sports team.

United will want more than the £4.2 billion paid to buy Chelsea last year, given the global reach of the Manchester club. However, football finance expert Kieran Maguire cited the club's second-quarter figures as evidence that Glazer's asking price was too high.

Indeed, United reported a profit of just £6.3m while shouldering a debt of £741m.

Speaking to Mail Online, Maguire falsified the Glazer family's asking price by pointing to the financial turmoil at the Old Trafford club.

Maguire, author of The Price of Football, said:

"When you look at the cash generated by the business, it's a far cry from £6 billion.

“Last August, the market valued United at around £2 billion. Likely it's currently worth twice as much, but much more and you really should fold your arms.

“Setting up an estimate is more of an art than a science.

“You look at how much money the company can make in the next 10 years, then you add up some magic numbers.

"I did it with United and, being very generous with the predictions, found £2.8 billion. The only way it's worth close to £6 billion is if you can control the broadcasting rights and sell them yourself. "As we've seen with Project Big Picture, that's not going to happen, so the numbers don't add up."

United's existing debt, which Sheikh Jassim is willing to pay if his buyout bid is successful, could worsen if the club suffers another season without qualifying for the Champions League.

Graham Potter says Chelsea are likely to clash with Bayern Munich in the Champions League as the two clubs begin talks over the transfer of Anthony Barry.

Thomas Tuchel, who replaced Julian Nagelsmann as Bayern head coach last week, has publicly announced his desire to reunite with Barry, who worked under the German boss during his time at Chelsea.

Chelsea were most unhappy with Tuchel's comments but now it looks like the permanent coach, who remains at Stamford Bridge under Graham Potter, will move to the Bundesliga giants.

Graham Potter said in his press conference:

"Anthony is in discussion, the clubs are in discussion. He is absent from us at the moment. It's between clubs, it's not something I'm into. I have a lot of respect for what he did here, a great coach, a great person. We have great staff that can fill the void. Teams can solve problems.

Chelsea could face Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals if the duo face Real Madrid and Manchester City respectively.

And Potter says that possibility is being considered as the clubs reach an agreement for Barry. He added:

"Obviously it's something that I'm pretty sure he's in the conversation for obvious reasons."

Potter has been under pressure for most of his first season as Chelsea head coach, but his side are unbeaten in their last four games before the international break.

But the break has given the former Brighton boss time on the training ground with little left over.

This is especially beneficial for N'Golo Kante, who has not played for Chelsea in all but the first two games of the season.

"It's good for N'Golo," Potter said when asked about the benefits of the international break. "We've got a handful of players, not even, in the first week and the rest of us will analyze and see how we can improve. “They [international players] can meet the requirements of international football and the Premier League. Everyone is eager and eager to meet you. There is a great spirit in the team.
