FC Barcelona head coach, Xavi Hernandez, addressed harsh and critical remarks from Ansu Fati's father and discussed negotiations with Lionel Messi, which could lead to the player's ouster the Argentinian returned to the club.
Bori Fati made the controversial comments while appearing on Spanish radio show El Partidazo de COPE on Tuesday night. Revealing that he told his son to give up his childhood outfit, the Guinean also criticized Fati's lack of minutes under Xavi and teased a move to Real Madrid.
Xavi covered the topic understandably during his pre-match press conference ahead of his side's clash with Elche on Saturday night.
As always, he tried to defuse the argument by saying:
"I only care about him [Ansu], not his father or the people around him."
"I've been through similar situations, he's suffering for his son and I understand that," Xavi added on Friday. "He's a great guy and he knows what he's talking about. I see him training and I see him [working] very well," continued Xavi. "I have complete trust and confidence in Ansu. I have talked with him a lot and met him a few times as well as with many other players. I was the first one who wanted him to be successful."
As for Messi, Xavi was asked to comment on his possible return just minutes after the club's vice president Rafa Yuste confirmed negotiations were underway with the Argentine side. "Now is not the time to talk about Leo's return. Until what can be done, there is a world of difference, but I will be the first to do everything I can to bring him back. back," Xavi insisted.
"I talk to him often, but now is not the time for everyone's sake:
for the player himself, for the club, for the current squad…” the 43-year-old military leader was silent before concluding:
"I wish he could come back to help us. He is the best player in the world and in history."
Messi became a free agent on June 30 but his possibility of a return to Barca is not easy in the face of competition from Paris Saint Germain, Inter Miami and the Catalan side's financial struggles.
