Lionel Messi could find himself playing in an unfamiliar position if he wants to make a great return to Barcelona.
With his contract with Paris Saint Germain set to expire at the end of the current season, nothing has been agreed yet and Messi's future at the club is currently in doubt.
The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner is in fine form this season with 18 goals and 17 assists in 32 appearances in all competitions for PSG.
As he continues to be linked with what will be an emotional return to Barcelona, ??he could find himself playing in a new position should he return to the Camp Nou.
According to Spanish news agency Mundo Deportivo, the Barcelona boss and Messi's former team-mate Xavi could use him in midfield. It has been reported that Xavi will be interested in using Messi as one of the four midfielders in his 4-3-3 system.
This means the Argentinian is likely to replace youngster Pablo Gavi as a false left winger who will move inwards as an 'insider' when the left-back moves forward.
In addition, Messi can also be used in the 'inside' position on the right wing, with support from midfielders such as Frenkie de Jong and Sergio Busquets.
However, if Xavi decides to let Messi play on the right wing of midfield, it could hamper the progress of Pedri, who has shone in that position so far this season.
During his time with Barcelona, ??Messi often played as a right winger or a striker. However, with Ousmane Dembele and Robert Lewandowski appearing to contribute those points, Messi may have to settle for a different role.

Recently, Barcelona vice president Rafael Yuste said he had contacted Messi and his representatives.
He said, according to The Guardian:
"Leo and his family know the love I have for them.
“I was involved in negotiations but unfortunately did not lead to a certain outcome. I have always had and have had a thorn in me that prevented Leo from continuing at our club. "Messi knows how much we appreciate him. I want him back. Of course we have contact with them.
Will we see Messi return to play for Barcelona next season? Only time will tell.
