David de Gea has turned down Manchester United's offer to open a contract but has stressed his love for the club and is looking for a solution to his future at Old Trafford.

David de Gea insists he 'loves' Manchester United despite their opening contract offer being turned down.

The goalkeeper's contract with the Red Devils will soon expire and he and the club are in the process of negotiating an extension. De Gea signed a lucrative contract in the summer of 2019, making him one of the highest-earning players in the Premier League and he accepts he will have to take a pay cut to stay.

Even so, he feels the first offer he received was too low and as the club's No 1 he still wants to be well paid. There is a bid to strike an agreement with the goalkeeper looking to extend his 12-year spell at Old Trafford as he looks to quell outside buzz about his future. He told Sky Sports:

"Of course I've been here for many years, enjoying every moment at this club, playing a lot of games. Of course it's nice to be here, it's a big club, I love the club and I'm really happy here, it's been the same for many years, a lot of noise about everything at this club except the players, we just focus on the game.

"Especially Sunday's game is huge for us because we want to finish in the top four. Like I said, we have a lot of games so we have to focus on training well, recover well, help the team and that's the most important thing, more than the contract or anything."

De Gea, on his current contract, has had a rough time, especially under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Notable mistakes cost his team and they resurfaced this term, notably when he conceded a goal against Brentford earlier in the season.

The goalkeeper also faces question marks over his playing style, which some say does not fit Ten Hag's system. The Dutchman's ball control ethos requires his goalkeeper to be comfortable with the ball and confident in his distribution. The United boss questioned this aspect of De Gea's game earlier in March.

He was asked about the Spaniard's problem with the ball and said:

"Since [the game] I can't ignore it, but I think we've seen a lot of games where he's done really well. I don't know why, or what [the reason] is. There's a lot of wind. , it's a different ball, maybe he's had some problems with that. But I know he can handle it and he'll do better on Sunday."

Dean Henderson has been loaned to Nottingham Forest this summer and has shown a desire to play regularly. He expressed frustration with his previous situation at Manchester, prompting Ten Hag to make a decision this summer.
