Ronaldo will leave United under a cloud following his controversial TalkTV interview with Piers Morgan. During the conversation, the Portuguese striker targeted Erik ten Hag, the Glazer family, the club itself and former teammates Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney for criticism towards him.
Shortly after the two-part interview was broadcast globally, United reached an agreement with Ronaldo regarding the termination of his contract. The move meant the 38-year-old was Qatar's only free agent to compete in the World Cup that winter.
Also on Thursday, Rooney spoke to CNN about Ronaldo's departure from Manchester. I said:
"I guess he got what he wanted.
"For Manchester United, it's important to get through that as quickly as possible and really refocus on the group of players that have been there and want to be there. And I think that's where Ten Hag has done so well in re-focusing the players and putting them in a position where they can easily get into the top four and win trophies too."
Despite the scandalous nature of the United split, Rooney added that Ronaldo's status with the Red Devils is unchanged and he remains a club legend.
