Jurgen Klopp has been very critical of Liverpool's performance - and especially their defence - in their heavy 4-1 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The visitors opened the scoring somewhat thanks to a goal from Mohamed Salah, but a brilliant team-work combination allowed Julian Alvarez - starting in place of injured Erling Haaland - to equalize from close range.

City then resumed play in the second half, with Kevin De Bruyne scoring almost immediately after the game restarted against goals from Ilkay Gundogan and man of the match Jack Grealish completing the match.

Klopp appeared frustrated on the sidelines throughout the game and was very displeased afterwards, criticizing his side's openness and lack of enthusiasm and saying they were 'lucky' not to concede more than four goals. .

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Klopp said:

“The key areas were clear. If you don't control the double 6 you have a real problem if you don't control the double 10 - Gundogan, De Bruyne in the middle [lines] - it's practically impossible to play because then the pitch becomes should be too wide.

“So we conceded the first goal due to an open ball in the midfield, I think, where we didn't even face a challenge. Then the ball outside was too deep for us and then the counter-attack happened. Big match.

“Then it was 2-1 right after [first half], then 3-1 when we were overloaded on one side, should have won the ball but didn't even make a tackle. So these things were completely impossible, but they did.

'And then we just opened up, like "wow!" They can do whatever they want and we just have to follow. We're lucky they weren't in the most greedy mood. They scored fourth but obviously they were happy too.

"Other than that, there's nothing good to say about this game. This game unfortunately we have to use to clarify the impossible.

“We cannot be without challenges in key areas. We couldn't be that open, absolutely impossible, but it happened. And now I stand here and I have to explain it but I can't explain it, I can only describe it.

Pep Guardiola, on the other hand, was delighted with what he saw, telling BBC Match of the Day:

“From the first minute until the 93rd minute, it was almost a perfect performance. Even with a 0-1 lead, we played well and Jack made an excellent save to save the score 0-2. “The way we play, the way we find space for the way they defend. Our intensity, pressing high. We were very settled and stuck in the plan. All the players are great.

“We have always fought against Liverpool, the way they defended, the way they played made it difficult for us. But today, the players were amazing. We played really well in all departments, so hats off to our players. Tell me about a player who didn't play well? No one is not playing well.
