Goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson secured a 2-0 win for manager Eddie Howe's side as Newcastle avenged their loss of the Carabao Cup final in February.

The result puts the Red Devils above the Red Devils in the Premier League table, with Newcastle now third and United now fourth after a fiery clash in the northeast.

The temper flared up at various points during and after the game, most notably the sight of United defender Martinez shoving his chair off the bench after Erik ten Hag sent the Argentina international off in the minute. 83.

Martinez and team-mate central defender Raphael Varane were replaced by Victor Lindelof and Facundo Pellistri as the Dutch boss made a tactical change while continuing the game 1-0. "Since the two centre-backs left, it's been a mess for United," Gary Neville said in match commentary. “However, Howe was not mistaken.

Newcastle scored again to finish them off and full-time right wingers Antony and Dalot engaged in a heated exchange while Bruno Fernandes scowled and waved at a teammate.

Meanwhile, earlier in the game, at half-time, Marcus Rashford lost his mind when angrily throwing his shoe to the ground after referee Stuart Attwell denied him a free-kick after being cut off by Dan Burn.

The challenge saw Rashford's incident fly off but no errors were made.

Former England winger Chris Waddle criticized Rashford's full-time performance, telling  the BBC:

“Rashford was nowhere to be seen. "His performance today was very poor."

PSG's season continued to go from bad to worse when they had to receive another defeat at home

They have now lost twice as many games in 2023 as in the whole of 2022

The season of failure goes from bad to worse

PSG's poor end to the season is getting worse after conceding consecutive home defeats in Ligue 1 for the first time since 2020.

The Parisians had hoped for a better performance, they had started on the flywheel. However, Olympique Lyon weathered the storm and finally punished their corrupt hosts.

Galtier's men were knocked out of the Champions League and Coupe de France, with the best chance of winning silver in Ligue 1, which is slowly slipping out of their hands.

Messi and Mbappe are controlled

According to Sporting News, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe combined to make a shot on target as PSG suffered an injury that was never really threatened in the Parc des Princes game. The duo were deftly thwarted by a disciplined display from Laurent Blanc's men - excluding PSG stores.

Lyon were ready to resist pressure from PSG and respond with venom, and they took all three points when threatened.

Messi booed again

There is no love lost between Paris Saint-Germain fans and the 2022 World Cup champions, Inside Sport reports

Before the final international break, Leo Messi was mocked by the club's fans, and the same was repeated in their weekend game against Olympique Lyon.

When Messi's name was revealed in the starting line-up against Lyon in Ligue 1, whistles and groans could be heard at the Parc des Princes before the match started.

The PSG bench is still biting

It becomes difficult for clubs to decide to change their transfer policy to avoid "dirty" players. The Parisians chose to invest in young talent at a modest price, but this decision ultimately proved fruitless.

In matches where the holders couldn't shine, Christophe Galtier really had no one to lean on. What makes matters worse are the injuries of key players like Neymar and Presnel Kimpembe.

Slender midfielder exposes PSG

PSG has a midfield too thin to rely solely on the brilliance of injured Marco Veratti.

The club struggled to cope with Lyon's deadly counter-attack, with Laurent Blanc's men easily escaping the pressure in midfield. Despite only holding the ball 38%, Lyon ended the game with xG (expected goal) of 1.73, 0.51 better than PSG, who had 62% of possession.

They forced Gianluigi Donnaruma to make five saves from close range, including Alexandre Lacazette's penalty, showing the fragility of the defence.
