At the end of day 29 of the English Premier League (EPL) season 2022/23, only three clubs in the English top flight had conceded fewer than 10 goals at home in this competition. Interestingly, all three clubs are interested in the race to qualify for the European Cup. Let's take a look at these defensive skins.
The club that has conceded the fewest away goals in the EPL this season is Manchester United. The defending Carabao Cup champions have only conceded eight goals at home in the Premier League this season. The Red Devils started the season with a 1-2 defeat at home to Brighton. Although they won the next two games at the Theater of Dreams, their opponents scored one goal in each. The 20-time England champion kept a clean sheet in the next five games. Manchester City and Crystal Palace then each scored one goal against Erik ten Hag's boys on the 20th and 22nd. The last EPL club to score against Manchester United this season was Leeds in a 2-2 win. on February 8th. Newcastle United is next on that list. The new warblers have conceded 9 goals at home since the beginning of the EPL 2022/23 season. In fact, their goalkeeper Nick Pope has kept a total of 13 clean sheets in the English top flight this season. Eight of them are kept at home. United opened the season with a clean sheet at home to Nottingham Forest but conceded three goals in a 3-3 draw with Manchester City 15 days later. Only Liverpool have scored more than one goal against Toons at St James' Park this season.
Liverpool have conceded the same number of goals at home to Newcastle this season. The Red Devils conceded a goal in a draw with Crystal Palace in the first game of the season at Anfield. The Merseyside team conceded 3 goals at home against Brighton and 2 against Leeds. They also conceded a goal every game against Newcastle, Southampton and Leicester.
